How does School Fuel support the Novato schools?

In 1978, more than 30 years ago, Proposition 13 was implemented. However, everyone receives the same public services no mater what level of taxes they currently pay.

Compared to what other states offer in public education, CA is still falling short of meeting the needs of students in these highly competitive times to enter colleges and the work force. Our government is neglecting public schools—not only in failing to provide enrichment programs but in key core subjects such as literacy, technology training, and elective programs required by incoming UC students.

Your generous donations to SCHOOL FUEL provide our public schools with funds that cannot be controlled by the State.

Your support is vital. Here are some facts that you may not have been aware of:

  • Less than 50% of property taxes go to schools statewide. It was 42.4% in 2001-02. It is 30% in Novato.
  • Federal funding provides less than 3% of total Novato School District revenues.
  • The state lottery provides less than 2% of California’s education budget.
  • Our district is currently allocated $4,561 per student. This is $192 less than the state average and thousands less than our neighboring districts in Marin County.
  • The California State budget shortfall has cut public education funding by $9 billion over the past 3 years.

Only Novato can make a change today and decide that public education is important. Great public schools not only produce well rounded contributing citizens, they also provide for safer streets, higher real estate values and increased civic pride, bringing in businesses and well educated people making our town a better place to live.
School Fuel intends to be here for Novato now and in the future. We need your help to keep Novato’s public schools matched with the best!
